The effect of the smoking ban and recent changes to the Highway Code are helping to change UK motorists' attitudes to the habit, research from Motorpoint shows.
Figures from the car supermarket, released today, show that 75 per cent of Britons would purchase a car without an ashtray - signalling that the number of motorists who smoke while driving is dropping.
Managing director of Motorpoint David Shelton commented: "With the changes in the law which we have seen this year, there is going to be a noticeable change in the way that motorists behave whilst at the wheel, as the push for increased driver safety becomes ever more prevalent."
The classification of smoking as a "distraction from driving" in the latest edition of the code will have an impact on car insurance claims, where smoking is involved in an incident.
Drivers found to be distracted by lighting up or looking for cigarettes as a cause of an accident will find it much more difficult to claim for car insurance than before.
Recent research from car insurance firm esure also revealed that around 45 per cent of UK drivers who smoke have either suffered an accident or a near-miss as a result of their habit.
In their survey of the motorists, the car insurance specialists revealed that 80 per cent take their hands off the wheel in order to light up - hinting at a widespread potential road danger.
