While the Ministry of Justice showed a decline in the number of less serious driving offences by people in the UK, motorists' perception about the financial severity of such penalties are skewed, says AA car insurance provider.
Drivers often fail to recognise that speeding and drink driving have considerably more penalties in terms of financial costs in the future, said spokesperson Ian Crowder of the AA.
"When you get flashed by a [speed] camera," he said, "you're potentially also collecting a £60 increase in your insurance premiums for the next three years."
As for drink driving, Mr Crowder said that some car insurance providers may waive a first-time offender but warned that "no insurance company will ignore a second offence".
A driver with a considerable amount of speeding fines or penalty points from drink driving may find themselves with much higher car insurance premiums and the inability or the inability to switch to another provider because of their record.
