Analysis of tyre tread wear can reveal car insurance claim-triggering unsafe driving practices, Kwik-Fit said today.
What's more, all manner of mechanical concerns can be detected by tyre wear patterns, the firm added.
For example, excessive wear at the edge of the tyre signifies incorrect wheel alignment, a problem which can affect handling and even increase the risk of crashes.
In this way, car insurance premiums can in turn be affected.
Wear patterns towards the centre of the tread, by contrast, could show the driver's tendency to accelerate too sharply, itself causing a heightened road safety risk.
Customer service director at Kwik-Fit David White said: "Tyres wear out quicker if they don't sit on the road surface correctly. To maximise tyre life, and provide optimum grip the tread should wear out evenly across the full width of the tyre.
"Just think, no matter how safely you drive this winter at the end of the day the only contact you have with the road are four areas each the size of a handprint - it is absolutely critical that your tyres are safety checked regularly by an expert."
