Britons who store items other than their vehicles in their garages amount to an amazing 60 per cent of the UK population.
Even more, the majority of space used in the garage does not go to the vehicle but to other goods such as punching bags and ladders, according to an NOP Automotive survey for the RAC Foundation.
While vehicles should have adequate car insurance under the assumption they will be kept safe in garages or parked safely near home, the value of household items may be in danger because they do not belong in a domestic outbuilding or garage says Legal and General insurance.
Ruth Wilkins, head of communications for Legal and General, said that just as household insurance does not cover for theft or damage to cars or motorised vehicles, "garages and outbuildings are great for storing items but it is vital to check that house insurance provides adequate cover for your belongings."
A general rule for ensuring that your items are safe and protected under your insurance scheme, stick to keeping the car in the garage and the furniture in the house.
