Arranging road tax, brake-down cover and car insurance and getting to grips with independent driving for the first time; just a few of the chores and concerns facing a newly qualified young British motorist. But now a US company is threatening to add to that list with a device that allows parents to monitor the quality of their children's driving from the comfort of an armchair.
Road safety company, GreenRoad, has devised a ‘black box' gadget that relays data to a website, allowing parents to spy on their children's driving. The device will monitor speed and manoeuvres and will inform an apprehensive mother or father when their offspring is braking too hard or taking corners too quickly. The gadget, called Safety Centre, is soon to be used in a trail scheme in Staffordshire.
“People have a tendency to think they are better drivers than they really are,” said head of Staffordshire County Council road safety, Adrian Hide. “The aim of this trail is not to spy on young people then punish them, but to highlight where they are going wrong so they can change their behaviour and avoid accidents”.
