A banned teenage driver has been informed that he could face jail after being caught riding a motorcycle without MoT, bike insurance or a driving licence.
Andrew Riley, 19 of Lowestoft, Suffolk, had been caught riding the vehicle in Lowestoft town centre without MoT, a valid driving licence or bike insurance after he had been banned from driving in for 12 months in April this year.
Riley admitted that he was aware that the motorcycle didn’t have valid MoT whilst riding the vehicle. He also admitted to not having bike insurance.
Prosecutor, Tess James explained to Lowestoft magistrate court yesterday that the 19 year old had confessed that he was aware he needed Mot, a licence and insurance to use the vehicle.
Richard Mann, spokesperson for Riley said: “It is not necessarily common knowledge that you cannot drive these bikes without a licence. He had taken it out in the evening for a spin around the block because he was bored - it's as simple as that.”
However, James Goldspink, Chairman of the bench said: “It was totally reckless and the risk of harm to others was high. These vehicles can reach speeds of up to 30mph.”
Riley was approved unconditional bail and will be sentenced early next month.
Motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured than drivers of other vehicles.
As the motorcycle industry grows more popular in the UK due to the current economic crisis, motorcycle insurance is a necessity which all insurers advise riders to ensure they have.
