Motorcyclists have been advised to ensure their motorbike insurance covers them from theft regardless of whether they have a fitted GPS system, it has been revealed.
According to vehicle recovery expert, Tracker, the system may not be 100 per cent reliable as the recovery of stolen bikes cannot be guaranteed.
The organisation revealed that more thieves are turning to a European technique called jamming which prevents the stolen vehicles being traced.
The device blocks satellite signals which are received by the GPS system.
Mark Walls, of Tracker said that the jamming device is “frighteningly easy” to build and warned motorcyclists to ensure they have adequate bike insurance as the devices are easy get hold of from the internet.
He said, "Whilst GPS/GSM devices have their place in stolen vehicle recovery, there really shouldn't be sole reliance on this technology."
Meanwhile, Weymouth police have taken action seizing two motorcycles in Weymouth after on-going complaints that the uninsured riders were causing havoc on the streets and fields behind Littlemoor estate.
Youths in Weymouth and Portland had been given previous warnings on the matter. over 100 bikes have been seized since 1st April.
PC Harrison said: "People have been dealt with for using a vehicle while causing alarm, distress or annoyance and we will be using the same powers in respect of motorcyclists at Littlemoor."
