Bike Insurance - Modified bikes could put riders in trouble - 06/10/2008

Police have warned that bikers who make modifications to their mopeds could face the wrath of the law, even as they risk voiding their bike insurance cover.

This warning comes against the backdrop of a growing number of bikers making alterations that would make their bikes speed faster than normal.

Mopeds are, according to the law, allowed to travel up to 30mph.

But reports said a number of teenagers have been speeding at up to 50mph. And police said it was illegal to make modification that would make mopeds go faster, especially if the riders had no full bike licence.

Following a three-hour operation, reports said, about 46 riders were stopped, with five persons having their bikes confiscated, while another five were handed a fine of £60 each and three points for speeding.

“Modification could mean the rider is breaching driving licence conditions and make their insurance policy void. This could have serious consequences if the person is involved in a crash,” explained PC Mick Gear.
