The Motor Cycle Industry (MCI) has welcomed the delay of introducing the new practical motorcycle test. The decision which was made by the Driving Standards Authority, (DSA) will now push back the introduction of the driving test date by six month from 29th September 2008, to the 30th March 2009.
Earlier this year, the MCI, supported by the Motorcycle Rider Training Association, Institute of Advanced Motorists, the Motorcycle Action Group and the British Motorcyclists Federation called for the new test scheme to be delayed by six months, after the news that only 39 of the 60 test centres would be ready in time for the initial open date.
The new test will introduce new elements, which include higher speed exercises and off-road tests. The implementation of the new tests could also help to lower bike insurance premiums.
Craig Carey-Clinch of the MCI said: “This is the result we were hoping for. Having organised the dialogue with the minister last week, MCI is delighted that [the transport minister] Mr Fitzpatrick and the DSA have responded quickly to our concerns about new test arrangements and especially to the road safety consequences of having so few test centres.
This move means that the DSA now has more time to get the proper infrastructure in place, and the industry will do all it can to assist this process.”
Carey-Clinch added; “We now look forward to working with the DSA on ensuring a smooth transition to the new motorcycle test over the coming six months.”
