As a growing number of people take to biking in the UK experts in the bike insurance industry are urging bikers to make sure they take out third-party insurance.
This is necessary as commuting to work in London alone rose by 83 per cent in the last eight years, even as accidents between bikers and pedestrians also saw an increase.
But it has been noted that less than two per cent of the nearly five million bikers across the country have third-party insurance.
The implication of this, according to experts, is that in the event of an accident the injured party could make claims worth thousands of pounds. One expert observed that the trend is very dangerous, particularly, as people downplay the risk of legal action if an accident was to occur.
The Institute of Advanced Cyclists also commented through a spokesman that the issue of making it a legal requirement for cyclists to have third-party insurance has been widely discussed, adding that it was more responsible and more encouraging to always have insurance protection.
