Bike Insurance - Mini motorbikes should be covered by bike insurance - 26/08/2008

Young motorists, who ride without bike insurance, to cover their mini motorbikes; or a license to ride, will be monitored more stringently and targeted by the Police, according to Police in Harborough, Leicestershire.

This comes after local residents complained to the Police, after several under-age riders were found riding their mini motorbikes in the town parks, according to reports in the local newspaper, the Harborough Mail.

The riders were reported to have been riding on the pavements and without helmets.

PC Steve Winn from Harborough Police spoke on parents, stating that they should be more aware of the fact that mini motorbikes need to be covered by bike insurance as well as having adequate road tax. He also added that the motorbikes, when ridden by young riders should not be, “ridden by children in parks, on pavements or without helmets.”

He added: "These are not toys which kids can just play with unsupervised."

In another newspaper report, a 22-year-old man, pleaded guilty of causing the death of his step-daughter, following an incident with a mini motorbike. Georg Franklin was found to have been riding on the pavements, with a mini motorbike, along with his three-year-old step-daughter, Abbie Perrin.

A car had pulled out from across the road, which caused Franklin to swerve, to avoid contact causing the infant to be flung to the ground; she later died of her injuries.
